Role of Micronutrients

Micronutrients

Commonly referred as trace elements as these nutrient components are required in small quantities, namely:

  • Iron (Fe)
  • Zinc (Zn)
  • Copper (Cu)
  • Boron (B)
  • Molybdenum (Mo)
  • Chlorine (Cl)

Iron

  • Promotes formation of chlorophyll
  • Acts as an oxygen carrier
  • Involving reactions in cell division and plant growth

Zinc

  • Vital for plant growth hormones and enzyme system
  • Necessary for chlorophyll production
  • Necessary for carbohydrate & starch formation
  • Aids in seed formation

Copper

  • Catalyzes several plant processes
  • Major role in photosynthesis
  • Increases sugar content
  • Improves flavor of fruits and vegetables

Boron

  • Essential for germination of pollen grains and growth of pollen tubes
  • Essential for seed and cell wall formation
  • Promotes maturity
  • Necessary for sugar translocation

Molybdenum

  • Aids in the formation of legume nodules
  • Needed to convert inorganic phosphates to organic forms in the plant

Chlorine

  • Involve in Phosphorus (P) uptake.
  • Enhances maturity of small grains on some soils
